Deeds of giving are the very foundations of the world.

As the coronavirus cases in India climb, imposing a lockdown on 1.3 billion people was always going to be challenging. So far, the country has had a reported 23,239 active cases and 725 deaths.

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has created a global health crisis that has had a deep impact on the way we perceive our world and our everyday lives. India is a country with extreme poverty in many areas; and many of its cities, such as Mumbai and Kolkata, are extraordinarily dense. We do have enough food to feed its entire population, just from a public stock. But it’s not clear that the food is getting to those places, or that it can in such a short period. In India, even if the intentions are good, the execution can be challenging, because there are a million blocks along the way. By taking up this challenge, to provide food services to the unreached population of the country, United Way Network is getting ahead of coronavirus by saving lives and livelihoods in India.

Healthcare professionals have been confronted with several pressing challenges since the onset of an outbreak. Not all hospitals had been equipped with sufficiently protective resources. Improved personal protection and hygiene management at community levels were then officially endorsed to protect the population from infections. United Way India believes that the development of technologies is urgently needed to fight against COVID-19.

Countries that are experiencing COVID-19 have adopted different approaches to slow the spread of the virus. In India, actions would need to be implemented locally, with different approaches. United Way India cooperates in dynamically developing and helping execute healthcare-expansion efforts with the help of our local chapters in Bengaluru, Baroda, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai.

We may currently need to keep our physical distance, but that doesn’t mean we can’t facilitate togetherness. Those human connections are what will get us through this crisis.
