Assam Disaster Response Program – Building resilience in and around Kaziranga National Park, India

An Overview

Goal: Support flood-affected communities on the fringe of Kaziranga National Park through flood relief, veterinary care, and livelihood initiatives.

Objectives:

Enhance connectivity and communication in flood-hit villages with community-managed rescue boats for relief, evacuations, and medical emergencies.

Provide veterinary care, highlands for livestock during floods, and predator-proof sheds for their well-being.

Boost the year-round economy through cash crop cultivation, fish production, and traditional weaving involving village women.

THE NEED

Assam’s extensive river network makes it susceptible to natural disasters, primarily floods and erosion, hindering the state’s development. The Brahmaputra and Barak Rivers, along with over 50 tributaries, lead to annual monsoon floods. These floods displace thousands, particularly those in low-lying areas. Livestock, crops, and granaries are lost, leaving people reliant on fruits and plantains for weeks.

THE Benefits

  • Disaster preparedness for villagers
  • Disaster mitigation for livestock
  • Securing Livelihoods

The Intervention

  • Training and distribution of human rescue boats
  • Predator proof sheds
  • Highland construction
  • Veterinary camps for animals
  • King chili cultivation
  • Securing fishponds
  • Community weaving centers

Beneficiaries Profile

  • 8000 individuals across 16 villages

Impact Till Date

  • A community weaving center in Sukkanigaon village now supports 18 women/families, helping them generate a sustainable income year-round.
  • Strengthened embankments with Areca nut and lemon plantations secure 120 ponds in villages, preventing the loss of fish crops.
  • 1,000 families have cultivated Bhot chili (King chili), with each receiving 50 saplings, resulting in 50,000 saplings planted.
  • Health examinations and deworming conducted for 1,500 cattle and 1,000 goats in 20 flood-affected villages.
  • Two highlands in flood-prone villages near Kaziranga National Park provide shelter for approximately 1,200 livestock and 600 people during floods.
  • 108 cattle sheds modified to protect livestock from wild animals, such as tigers and leopards, when their food supply is compromised.
  • 20 country-made boats prepared and distributed to aid people’s movement during floods in fringe villages near Kaziranga National Park.
