Heavy rains in north India, starting around July 18,2023, brought devastation to Uttarakhand, claiming lives and causing significant property damage due to landslides and other rain-related incidents. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes this unprecedented rainfall to the confluence of a western disturbance and monsoonal winds. The resulting destruction of connecting roads in Uttarakhand, along with neighboring states, has severely affected the movement of essential goods and commodities like grains, vegetables, and medicines.

Immediate Relief in Chamoli District

Uttarakhand, particularly Chamoli district, has borne the brunt of these natural calamities. More than 30 roads were blocked, leaving villages isolated and pilgrims stranded on the Badrinath highway. Reports of waterlogging in Dehradun and Haridwar further compounded the challenges, disrupting daily life. In Tehri district, Goth village faced destruction from landslides and heavy rainfall, leading to damaged houses and roads.

In response to this crisis, United Way India swiftly mobilized its resources to provide immediate relief to the affected communities. Through our ground partner, we initiated the distribution of Flood Relief Ration Kits (FRRKs) under our “Swahar” initiative to vulnerable families in disaster-affected regions, focusing on addressing urgent needs.

Relief Distribution in Remote Villages

United Way India, in collaboration with local authorities, identified and prioritized the poorest and most vulnerable households, with a special focus on women, children, and the elderly. Two separate relief distribution drives under United Way India’s Swahar program were conducted, each targeting different remote villages in Uttarakhand’s Himalayan Region, which lacked road connectivity due to the damaged infrastructure.
