At United Way India, our commitment to disaster relief and community rehabilitation extends beyond immediate aid. Through a holistic approach, we aim to provide sustainable support to communities affected by natural disasters. In collaboration with our partners, we have impacted the lives of millions across India, and our latest initiative in Kaziranga, Assam, exemplifies our dedication to fostering resilience and preparedness in the face of annual flooding.

 A Comprehensive Rehabilitation Approach

The Flood Rehabilitation Project in Kaziranga, Assam, is a testament to our three-pronged approach in providing disaster relief support. We begin with immediate relief efforts, transition to mid-term relief, and ultimately focus on the holistic and sustainable rehabilitation of communities.

Key Interventions Making a Difference

1. Rescue Boats for Disaster Preparedness: Recognizing the vulnerability of villages to annual flooding, we have provided 20 rescue boats to enhance the preparedness of communities, ensuring swift evacuation and assistance during emergencies.

2. Cattle-Proof Sheds and Metal Fencing: Large sheds fortified against wild animals and floods, equipped with metal fencing, offer a secure haven for livestock. This intervention safeguards both livelihoods and community assets.

3. Highlands for Livestock and Fodder Cultivation: Creating elevated grounds for livestock and cultivating fodder ensures temporary shelter during flooding, minimizing the impact on both animals and agricultural practices.

4. Veterinary Camps for Livestock Health: Conducting 20 veterinary camps before annual flooding ensures comprehensive immunization and medical support for livestock, preserving the economic backbone of communities.

5. Bhot Jolokia Cultivation for Economic Empowerment: By introducing Bhot Jolokia (King chilli) cultivation, we aim to enhance income opportunities for farmers and farmer groups, fostering economic resilience in the face of adversity.

6. Securing Fish Ponds for Livelihood Improvement: Developing 120 rural ponds not only safeguards fish cultivation but also significantly contributes to the improvement of livelihoods in the region.

7. Community Weaving Centre Empowering Women: The establishment of a Community Weaving Centre goes beyond economic empowerment; it promotes the traditional art of weaving among women. Crafting products like the Assamese Gamocha, which has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, adds cultural significance to the initiative.

Impact Beyond Numbers

Our collective efforts have touched the lives of 10,000 individuals and 5,000 livestock, fostering resilience, economic stability, and community empowerment. Beyond statistics, it’s the stories of transformed lives and communities better equipped to face the annual challenges that define the true impact of the Flood Rehabilitation Project in Kaziranga.

The Flood Rehabilitation Project in Kaziranga, Assam, embodies our commitment to empowering communities, building resilience, and fostering hope in the face of adversity. Through strategic interventions and collaborative efforts, we strive to create sustainable change, ensuring that communities are better equipped to withstand and recover from the challenges posed by annual flooding. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by natural disasters, paving the way for a brighter and more resilient future for all.
